Creditable Service

Creditable service is gained through retirement deductions withheld from employment earnings. Minimum creditable service time is a prerequisite for retirement, unless membership date was before January 1, 1978 or retirement is the result of a permanent work related disability.

For members, classified in Group 1, 2 or 4, with membership dates before April 2, 2012, you must have ten years of creditable service and be at least 55 years of age to retire; with twenty years of creditable service you can retire at any age.

For members with membership dates on or after April 2, 2012, the minimum creditable service requirement remains in effect, except for employees working in a public safety position for at least 12 months immediately preceeding retirement. Age and salary factors vary.

In certain circumstances, active members can buy back creditable service to increase their total creditable service towards retirement. All buy backs, however, must be attributable to previous municipal employment or for military service as specified under state law.
